"He did WHAT!?"
I couldn't believe it when I saw the news. And I wasn't the only one.
Almost the entire state of Washington was pissssseeeddd.
No, this had to be some sort of joke. Right?
I mean, how do you beat the odds, take a rag-tag team of football players to the National Championship game... only to jump ship and leave two days later?
If you're confused and wondering what the heck I'm talking about, let me give you some background:
My alma mater, the University of Washington, made the National Championship game earlier this year (we lost but still made the natty).
Anyways, the head coaching job at Alabama (the most sought after position in the country) had recently opened up…
So two days later, our coach said "adios muchachos" and left for Bama.
Was it a bit unfortunate for us? Yes, yes it was.
But it taught me a few important lessons about building a personal brand:
→ Consistency Compounds
Our coach started his career at a high school and worked his way up to the big leagues.
He put in the reps and remained consistent for years (I think he started coaching like 12 years ago or something, just to put things into perspective).
Now? He’s coaching arguably the best college football program in history.
Show up daily, put in the work, and remain patient and good things will come from it.
→ Become the “Go-To” Guy
After making the National Championship game in his second year, he quickly became the “go-to guy” in college football.
Everyone wanted him to coach their football team next year.
He became so good that he was impossible to ignore.
Your brand should be no different.
Become so good at what you do that opportunities come to you like a moth attracted to the light.
→ Have Fun Building
Cliché, I know.
But there’s no point in building something if you aren’t having any fun with it.
Put in the work and remain consistent.
But don’t forget to have fun along the way.
Remember, the work is the reward.
Truth is, your personal brand is your new resumé. And in a few months from now, it'll be the reason you're able to attract some of the biggest brands to you... just like how Alabama became so interested in our coach.
